The number of death of malignant tumors is increasing among general population in
Japan. Malignant tumor has become the NO. 1 cause of death since 1981 replacing
cerebro-vascular disease. The death rate of malignant tumor in 1986 is 158.5 per 100,000
population and the actual number is about 200,000. This number accounts for about 25%
of the total death of any reason including accidents in Japan. This death rate has
become 173.6 per 100,000 population in 1990. Malignant tumor is definitely strengthening
its position as the most life-threatening disease in modern Japanese society.
Concerning the location of tumor in body, gastric cancer is marking the first place for
death cause of Japanese male as of 1986. Lung cancer is the second and hepatic cancer
is the third cause. Lung, hepatic, colon, and pancreatic cancer is rapidly increasing in
number while gastric cancer is reducing its number. This tendency is explained in terms
of changes in life style, especially in eating, and changes in other environmental factors.
